Sod or Hydroseed For My Lawn Installation?

Both sod and hydroseed offer different benefits, the type of lawn installation you choose will depend on a few factors. Budget is the first consideration, because of the labor intensity of sod installation it tends to be more expensive whereas hydroseeding is a simpler and quicker process so the cost is typically lower. MF Landscape & Design’s technicians can survey your property and help you decide which option is a good fit for your budget. Another consideration is timing. Sod creates a nearly instantaneous lawn while hydroseed requires time for germination and maturing as the root system of the young grass needs to establish itself. Hydroseeding is a great option for a lawn that will get heavy use, but you need to keep in mind the time it will take to establish the lawn. Sod is better for ornamental lawns that do not receive as much traffic, sod has a great appearance but tends to be less comfortable to the touch. You may want to take this into consideration for a residential property that will be used by children and pets as a play area. Overall, either sod or hydroseeding for your lawn installation are both great options, and MF looks forward to helping you decide which is the best fit for your property.

What Is The Process For Sod Lawn Installation?

Sod is sourced from a sod farm, that grows and cuts the pieces for lawn installation. Before sod can be installed the site must be completely stripped and graded to smooth out bumps in the lawn and prepare the soil. Much like with a hydroseed lawn installation, a sod lawn installation must be applied on soil that has been compacted to prevent degrading. Pieces of sod are cut into squares or rectangles and laid on the compacted soil for installation.

MF Landscape & Design’s lawn care technicians will carefully fit the pieces of sod to completely and seamlessly cover your space. Newly installed sod must be heavily watered to stimulate the root system to establish itself in the freshly compacted topsoil beneath it. Sod pieces have a tight root system that has been carefully cultivated for a dense appearance, the root system of the sod will quickly establish itself in the new site without allowing space for weeds to emerge. Sod installations tend to establish themselves more quickly and weed content tend to remain very low.

The cost of installing sod as opposed to hydroseed is higher because sod installation is more labor intensive and also provides the customer with a finished product.

What Is The Process For A Hydroseeded Lawn Installation?

Hydroseeding is the direct spread of grass seed to install or renovate your lawn. There are two primary steps to hydroseeding to install your lawn. The first step involves grading the entire area, to prepare the soil conditions to be favorable in both height and density. For lawn installation, the soil actually needs to be compacted which may seem somewhat counter-intuitive, an important step that is often misunderstood and neglected in the landscaping industry.

To prevent the site from losing its grade, the area is not rototilled since that would loosen the soil too much. MF Landscape & Design’s professional lawn installation technicians grade the site with track loading machines to create the proper conditions for drainage and a smooth attractive lawn. This process helps the soil accept the hydroseed slurry because it loosens the top half inch of soil in preparation. Loosening the topsoil adds oxygen to the soil which will help start the germination of the hydroseed mixture.

Application of the hydroseed mixture is a simple process that it completed in one step. MF Landscape & Design will customize the application to the needs of your property depending on sun and shade etc.

Irrigation Is A Must With New Lawn Installation

Irrigation is a must. Although Massachusetts is considered a cooler climate, our summers can be hot and dry. Providing the right amount of water daily throughout the first year of your new lawn can mean the difference between success and failure. At MF Landscape, we are always extolling the virtues of having an automated irrigation system. Not because we love to install and maintain irrigation systems, but because they keep your yard clean and green without you having to water. It’s just a fact that busy people with active lives simply don’t have time to consistently water their lawn. A new lawn, whether seed or sod, is vulnerable to drought stress. Your best chance to have the best lawn is the first time we install it.
